MORE STELVIN SUCCESS

Wines closed with Stelvin caps have generally matched or outsold the same product under cork, report the Clare Valley producers who adopted the closure for their 2000 Rieslings. The group has also announced that the original 13 members have now been joined by a further six producers in the Clare Valley and more than 50 premium wine producers from other regions of Australia and New Zealand. The group claims that after assessing the development of its wines over the past 15 months and many bottlings by other Australian producers - some dating back more than two decades - this evidence confirms that Stelvin is the most effective closure,' with diligent commercial use of Stelvin caps proving to be technically flawless'. This success has prompted some of the producers to use Stelvins for their other wines. Widespread use has previously been restricted by the limited availability of a range of premium bottles, but the group said that this situation is about to change. A spokesperson said: The introduction of Stelvins on premium wine represents the most significant qualitative gain our industry has experienced in recent times, and we are proud to have played our part in this. The group now looks forward to joining with producers of all other wine types in the introduction and acceptance of Stelvin as an appropriate high quality closure, not exclusively for Riesling but for all premium wine.'
