Port sales continue to decline.

Published:  23 July, 2008

Port sales continue to fall worldwide, although light wine sales in the Douro are bucking the trend.

The regulatory body for Port - the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto (IVDP) - has released its figures for 2006 which show Port sales continue to decline. This is part of a general decline since 2001.

World sales totalled 10.2 million cases, worth 396 million euros - a 2.2% fall.

The major trend in 2006 was an increase in Buyers' Own Brands to 3.4m cases. Shippers' Own Brands fell 8% by volume but still accounts for 6.6m cases.

In the UK, which is the world's number one market for premium Port, Shippers' Own Brands continue to dominate with more than three-quarters of the market.

However, Douro light wine sales increased 14.9% by volume to 1.8m cases and 25.5% by value to 62.1m euros.
