MEET THE 2001 MWs

Giles Cooke, regional manager and buyer at Alliance Wine in Beith, has passed the 2001 Master of Wine Examination. Cooke joins the four passes announced on 7 October (Tim Atkin, Beverley Blanning, Patricia Stefanowicz and Linda Jotham) and was given his award at the annual Institute of Masters of Wine reception at Vintners' Hall in London on 12 November. Jane Carr, executive director of the IMW, also announced the winners of the 2001 MW awards and four new scholarships for current MW students. The Tim Derouet memorial award for an outstanding candidate went to Linda Jotham, as did the Bollinger medal for an outstanding pass in the practical examination; the Robert Mondavi award for the best candidate in the theory examination went to Tim Atkin; the Errzuriz award for the outstanding candidate in the Business of Wine paper went to Beverley Blanning, as did the Villa Maria Group award for an outstanding viticulture paper. The new Henkell Shnlein award for an outstanding dissertation went to Patricia Stefanowicz. There were four student scholarships: the Davies Langton award went to Tim Marson of Oddbins Fine Wine; the MCD scholarships went to Sarah Chadwick of Dourthe UK and Pierpaolo Petrassi of IWS; and Dr Neil Beckett of Harpers won the Sainsbury's scholarship.
