Viniportugal vice-president to open new winery

Published:  23 July, 2008

Paulo Amorim, the vice-president of generic body Viniportugal, is to open a new winery in the Alentejo.

Amorim, who is also president of the G7 group of Portuguese wineries, told Harpers.co.uk at the Vinexpo wine fair that the new facility will be situated near Redondo, complete with 100 hectares of vineyards.

Although Amorim is unrelated to the cork company of the same name, he has set up a partnership with the group, and the winery will have its walls covered in cork.

He said: "We're calling it Wine Vision, and we should be opening by September. I've been working in the wine industry for 25 years, I was 49 last year, and I've always had this dream."

Amorim's partner in the project is Luis Duarte, who works at the Esporao winery in the Alentejo with Australian winemaker David Baverstock.

Wine Vision will produce wines from three regions - Alentejo, Douro and Vinho Verde - with three quality tiers in each: premium (4.99), super-premium (8.99), and icon (around 20).

Amorim added: "It's a hell of a risk! I have three kids, and I've put my neck on the line with this, so I have to be careful."
