SA's national vineyard set aside for conservation

Published:  23 July, 2008

South Africa's Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI) plans to put 50,000 hectares (ha) aside for conservation by the end of the decade.

BWI is co-hosting a conference, Vinecology: Understanding the management of biodiversity within vineyard landscapes at the end of June in the Cape Winelands.

It will be attended by delegates from Australia, New Zealand, and California, and takes place ahead of the International Society of Conservation Biology Workshop in the city of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.

SA is the eighth-biggest wine producer in the world with 102,000ha cultivated to vine, representing 3.5% of global output.

Almost 95% of the country's wine growing takes place in the Cape Flora Kingdom (CFK). It is recognised as a World Heritage site.
