Stratford's first venture into Spain

Published:  23 July, 2008

Bodegas Olvena in Somontano is the first Spanish winery - and only the second Old World producer - to be part of Stratford's Wine Agencies' portfolio.

The bodega, which is based near the town of Barbastro in the Aragonese region of Somontano, owns 240 hectares of vineyard, and does not buy in grapes.

Its wines include a Tempranillo/Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend, a barrel-fermented Chardonnay, a Gewurztraminer and a Syrah/Grenache blend.

Stratford MD Paul Stratford said: It was just too good an opportunity to miss. Spanish wines are performing well in a market that is dominated by New World wines, and we decided that the time was ripe to enter the Spanish market with this forward-thinking producer.'

The range will retail between 5.99 and 17.99, and is being targeted at independent retailers.
