Record exports for France

Published:  23 July, 2008

French wine and spirit exports hit an all-time high in 2006. According to the Fdration des Exportateurs de Vins et de Spiriteux de France (FEVS), exports were up 12.9% in 2006, representing a total value of 8.74 billion.

The increase is attributed to strong sales of Champagne and Cognac, which were up 14.7% and 16.4% by value respectively.

Mid-range and premium wines led growth in the light wine sector. A total of 143 million cases were exported, a 5.2% increase by volume. Value was up 9.9% to 3.89m.

Bordeaux and Ctes du Rhne wines saw strong growth, up 23.2% and 17.4% by value. The Languedoc Roussillon and Beaujolais both saw values drop.

Philippe Casteja, president of the FEVS, said: Growth has been particularly strong in the US and Asia. 2006 has been particularly notable for the "premiumisation" of the export market.'
