Sauvignon Blanc takes top Chile award

Published:  23 July, 2008

For the first time in its four-year history, a white wine has triumphed at the Annual Wines of Chile Awards.

The 2006 Reserve Sauvignon Blanc from Vias Casas del Bosque in the Casablanca Valley won the Sauvignon Blanc Trophy as well as Best in Show.

Michael Cox, Wines of Chile's UK director, said: I was delighted when I found out a Sauvignon Blanc had won. Chile is producing some excellent examples of this cool-climate varietal.'

Winners among the 11 trophies awarded at a gala dinner in Santiago on January 12 were Via Odfjell for its 2004 Orzada Carmenere; Vin Porta for its 2005 Winemaker Reserve Syrah; and Vin Nueva Mundo for its 2006 Tacn Alto Chardonnay.

Judges this year were all from the United States, and included two MWs - Bob Paulinski and Mary Ewing-Mulligan - as well as Joshua Greene, editor of Wine & Spirits magazine, and Jay Miller, critic for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

Casas del Bosque is no stranger to the awards, having won trophies in each of the past three years, including last year's Pinot Noir Trophy for its Reserve 2005. Similarly, Lurton's Hacienda Araucano Cabernet Sauvignon has won the Cabernet Trophy with two consecutive vintages - 2004 and 2005.

Over the three-day event, judges blind tasted 425 wines from 95 wineries. The full list of trophies, 31 golds, 83 silvers and 126 bronze medals are available on www.winesofchile.org

Previous Best in Show winners were Viedos Orgnicos Emiliana's red blend Coyam 2001, Via Falernia's Alto Tierra Syrah 2004, and Via Matetic's EQ Syrah 2004.
