Drinks trade must face the future, says Carson

Published:  23 July, 2008

The drinks trade must face the future now and the challenge is to embrace social responsibility, says Christopher Carson, chairman of Constellation Wines Europe and chairman of the Wine & Spirit Trade Association.

Carson was speaking at the annual Wine & Spirit Education Trust lecture which took place on Monday (9 October) at Vintners' Hall in London.

He told the audience that the drinks industry is under fire, with newspaper headlines such as binge drinking' and alcohol-fuelled'. He said that the sector needs to work together to ensure that it behaves in a responsible fashion. He warned that if the drinks industry fails to self-regulate, the government will legislate and impose regulations which the trade may find unfair and onerous.
