TESCO LAUNCHES WINE WAREHOUSE

Published:  23 July, 2008

Tesco is moving into the home delivery market for wine by making the company's entire stock of 800 wines available on its website. As well as the full range (the largest Tesco store carries 280 lines), the Wine Warehouse offers pre-packed mixed cases and special offers. There is a 5% discount on every case, although there is a flat rate 5 delivery charge. The service boasts a "two-hour delivery slot", whereby the Tesco.com van delivers at a convenient time. Mainstream wines are picked in-store, while specials are sourced from a dedicated central depot. Tesco claims to be the UK's largest wine retailer, selling one in five bottles of all wine sold in the UK. l Safeway claims to be the "fastest-growing wine retailer in the UK", according to AC Nielsen Homescan. Its wine sales grew by 18.4%, its closest competitor lagging 7.8% behind. Safeway is the fourth largest supermarket behind Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda, and stocks 825 wines. It has wine advisors for 300 of its stores.
