Published:  23 July, 2008

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has signed a memorandum of understanding' (MOA) with the two leading UK spirits trade associations designed to cement cooperation in dealing with spirits fraud.

The Scotch Whisky Association and Gin and Vodka Association (which together represent 90% of spirits producers in the UK) have agreed to cooperate in a number of areas, including identifying and fast tracking' enquiries on suspect supply routes, sharing intelligence on irregular trends in the supply chain and notification of suspicious orders. The new measures are in addition to the introduction of duty stamps next year, announced in the 2005 Budget.

John Healey MP, financial secretary to the Treasury, said: The industry is uniquely placed to provide information that could have a significant impact on spirits fraud.'
