Taittinger to expand vineyard at Domaine Evremond

Published:  24 May, 2019

Champagne Taittinger is in the process of expanding its vineyard at Domaine Evremond, according to Hatch Mansfield's marketing director Lynn Murray.

During London Wine Fair (LWF) this week, Murray said that the number of hectares planted would increase from 20 to 28.5 this month, in anticipation of strong demand for their inaugural English sparkling wine.

“We are currently planting an additional 8.5 hectares in Kent – approximately 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay,” said Murray.

Patrick McGrath MW, managing director of Hatch Mansfield, added: ‘These new plantings took place in ideal conditions on two adjacent sites and we are optimistic that it will produce top quality fruit in the future.”

“We plan to produce the first vintage this year, with a potential release date of 2023 or 2024.”

According to Murray, the 2018 harvest produced “good wine,” but the quantities were too small.

In May 2017, Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger helped to plant the first vines on the site in Kent, which is situated near to Chilham village.

Taittinger’s timing is perfect – sales of British sparkling wine continue to rise in the UK, with exports also enjoying a healthy momentum.
