Majestic releases first ‘NDA’ English wine

Published:  26 February, 2018

Majestic has released a batch of sparkling wine for which it is asking buyers to comply with a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) to protect the details of the tipple.

The 7,000 bottles of Parcel Series English Fizz, which are available now on a ‘first come, first served’ basis (rrp: £22.48), come from a single vineyard in the south of England and has been bottled by Hambledon, which owns three vineyards in the UK.

Majestic said it had bought the whole parcel of this wine - with an English rosé to follow later in the year.

The retailer had decided to protect the details of the wine, including which vineyard it comes from and when it was made, because of the marginal nature of the English climate, which makes "getting the right vineyard site crucial”, said sparkling buyer, James Reed.

The NDA was a precaution Majestic only usually used for really top end international names, he added.

“The UK saw strong sales of English sparkling wine this Christmas and we are keen to highlight the best homegrown wine the country can offer,” he said.

There has been something of a land grab in recent years as English wine has gained increasing renown around the globe, with big players like French company Taittinger snapping up prime spots of land in Kent and Sussex.

The fact that some English producers were becoming household names and challenging Champagne was "fantastic news for the industry", said trading director, Richard Weaver.

“We are seeing English Wines begin to step out from the shadow of their French cousins and we’re proud that Majestic has found such a high quality vineyard to continue to lead the way.”

The Parcels Series English Fizz is available from Majestic stores across the country and online.
