Thresher recruits and selects managers online

Published:  23 July, 2008

The Thresher Group has introduced a new online application and selection process to revolutionise' its branch-manager recruitment.

Candidates for branch-manager positions at Wine Rack, Thresher and The Local apply online through a careers website. They take an online numerical-reasoning test and a customised online personality questionnaire, both provided by assessment specialist PSL. According to the Thresher Group, the tests save time and effort by screening out unsuitable candidates prior to the interview stage'.

We used to recruit branch managers using a telephone hotline and an audition day, but this was very labour-intensive and failed to produce the best-suited candidates for Thresher Group,' said Claire Giannissi, Thresher's recruitment manager. Now, with online testing, we only invite to an assessment centre candidates who are likely to be successful in the role.'

The numerical-reasoning test assesses a candidate's understanding of basic financial information, such as a profit-and-loss account. Around 30% of candidates are sifted out after completing this test. Those who pass will go on to take a customised version of PSL's online personality questionnaire, which measures 25 factors such as 'extroversion, emotionality, openness to experience, energy and structure'. This screens out approximately another 30%

of applicants.

The remaining candidates are invited to attend a face-to-face assessment with a district manager. Held in-store, these involve a competency-based interview and work-related exercises. Successful candidates, who join as trainee managers, start a 12-week branch-manager development programme, which includes management, product knowledge and on-the-job training.

We need enthusiastic and approachable branch managers who can manage their teams, build strong relationships with local customers and create a dynamic, fun environment within the store,' said Giannissi.
