Ten new Masters of Wine announced

Published:  31 August, 2018

Congratulations are in order for 10 new faces just anointed as Masters of Wine, including the first woman in Spain (Almudena Alberca, pictured) to achieve the title, along with the first female winemaker of Greek decent, Olga Karapanou Crawford.

The Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW) confirmed as new members: Almudena Alberca MW (Spain), Barbara Drew MW (UK), Olga Karapanou Crawford MW (USA), Regine Lee MW (UK), Elsa Macdonald MW (Canada), Thomas Parker MW (UK), Lindsay Pomeroy MW (USA), Nicolas Quillé MW (USA), Job de Swart MW (Netherlands) and Tim Triptree MW (UK).

The international spread of the new MW’s reflects the increasingly global reach of the IMW’s coveted initials, with 380 Masters of Wine now based in 30 countries.

The 2017-2018 MW study programme had over 340 students from over 40 countries enrolled, with membership of the IMW covering all aspects the trade and those communicating and educating about wine.

Not only are the MW exams notoriously tough, but for those that pass all MWs are first required to sign an MW code of conduct which requires MWs to act with honesty and integrity and to use every opportunity to share their understanding of wine with others.
