More accessible' Laphroaig launched

Published:  23 July, 2008

Islay malt producer Laphroaig has launched a more accessible' single malt, partly matured in 100-litre quarter casks'.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask is Laphroaig single-malt whisky aged for between six and nine years, and then matured for just under a year in 100-litre casks. The smaller casks were a more manageable size for distillery workers in the early 1800s, who needed to load the casks on to pack horses.

The inspiration for the product came from master blender Robert Hicks.

Bottled at 48% ABV and non-chill-filtered, Laphroaig Quarter Cask will retail for 25.99 for a 70cl bottle. Oddbins already lists the product, with Tesco hoping to stock it by mid-October.

Laphroaig's brand heritage director Bill Bergius has

assured that it will be business as usual following the sale of Laphroaig to Fortune Brands from Allied Domecq. He told Harpers that the Fortune board had been very positive about all the brands'.
