New Zealand premium exports hit a high note in the US and UK

Published:  26 February, 2018

New Zealand’s reputition as a top producer of quality wines continue to rise in the UK and across the world, as it is named the third biggest wine importer in value to the US.

After hitting the milestone in 2016, New Zealand is back at number three again with value imports of US$422 million, putting it third behind Italy (US$1.9 billion) and France (US$1.8 billion), according to the newest Gomberg Fredrikson Report.

New Zealand produces less than 1% of the world’s wine, but from that often tops the global value charts and highest average price per litre.

While France remains top of the table for value sales in the UK on-trade, the gap between it and New Zealand is narrowing: French wine sales have increased £3.30 per bottle since 2015, but New Zealand has increased 13% quicker, by £5.65, meaning the gap between them now stands at only £1.45 compared to £3.80 in 2015 (CGA via the WSTA’s Q3 report).

New Zealand is also one of the main growth drivers in the UK on-trade alongside Italy, albeit from a much smaller base.

In the year to September 2017, New Zealand’s value rose by 17% to £169m and 9% in volume to 61,000 hls, while Italy grew 13% to £1,161m and 7% to 486,000 hls.

Growth was similarly strong in the UK off-trade, where New Zealand wines grew more than any other country in the 12 months to September (Nielsen), rising by 14% in value to £449m and 15% volume to 473,000 hls.

It remains the eighth largest country of origin for both on and off-trade sales.

In the on-trade, its price per litre is £27.74, behind France (£29.19).

In the off-trade, this is reversed, bringing in £9.50 per litre, beating France at £9.17 and Italy.
