Italian ex-cellar prices falling

Published:  23 July, 2008

As Italians begin muttering about abandoning the euro, news comes that the crisis in the wine sector is deepening. In May 2005, according to statistical researchers ISMEA, prices for wines at source fell 2.4%.

This was the 17th consecutive month of reductions (since January 2004), pushing ex-cellar prices to their lowest level in 10 years. Principal victims of the price reductions, in May, were vini da tavola, especially in the white sector (down 4.6%, with reds down 3.3%). DOC(G) wines fell by a less dramatic 0.2% (reds) and 0.7% (whites).

Over the past year wine prices at source have thus fallen by 21.5% overall (whites -25.4%). As for the first five months of 2005, compared with the same period last year, the downturn is 21.2%, the brunt of the drop being felt, once again, by the vini da tavola (which includes IGT wines and, therefore, the SuperTuscans).
