ADT 2017 promises focus on premiumisation and innovation

Published:  05 January, 2017

Premiumisation is the key trend being flagged at the annual Australia Day Tasting, later this month, with innovations such as diversifying grape varietals and sparkling reds also likely to prove talking points.

The Australia Day Tasting is the largest trade tasting of Australian wine outside Australia. Spread across three venues, this year's tasting will see 1,100 wines from some 200 wineries presented by around eighty exhibitors.

Iconic premium wines available at the tasting include Penfold's St Henri Shiraz, Torbreck's Descendant, Clonakilla's Shiraz Viognier, Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon, Henschke's Julius Riesling and De Bortoli's Noble One.

Australian wine exports to the UK in the $5-to-$7.49 and $10-upwards brackets per litre FOB are up 38% and 20% respectively, Wine Australia reports.

Sparkling reds from Dowie Doole, Gatt Wines, Peter Lehmann, Taltarni and Turkey Flat will also be presented at ADT, as will a range of less common varietals including Assrytiko, Dolcetto, Fiano, Lagrein, Malbec, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese and Touriga Nacional.

Laura Jewell MW, head of market EMEA for Wine Australia, said: "The trend towards premium wine is my prediction, but not just for 2017 as this is a gradual, ongoing movement. All three potential trends - alternative varieties, sparkling red and the move to premium - demonstrate that it's a very exciting time for Australia. Quality, diversity and innovation are the hallmarks of Australian wine and this is exactly what we'll be showcasing at the Australia Day Tasting."

The Australia Day Tasting takes place at three venues. It will begin on January 24 at B1, Southampton Row, London WC1B 4DA. On January 26 it will be at The Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh EH2 2EQ. Its final date is January 30, when it will be at the RHA Gallery, 15 Ely Place, Dublin 2. Opening times vary across the the events.
