GlenDronach releases limited edition 1968 sherry-aged single malt

Aberdeenshire distillery GlenDronach has announced its oldest release yet, a 1968 single cask in a limited edition of just 301 bottles.

The single malt was laid down in a Pedro Ximenez Sherry Hogshead and is bottled at 45.9% abv.

It forms part of the distillery's Batch 13 range of nine single-cask whiskies, with other releases ranging between 12 and 24 years old.

All have been aged in Pedro Ximenez or Oloroso sherry casks, a signature feature of GlenDronach single malts.

Billy Walker, owner and master blender at GlenDronach, said: "This marvel is an amazing, venerable and exceptionally rare whisky and it is sure to become one of our most sought-after bottlings.

"We only have a few casks of the legendary 1968 vintage left in our inventory and they are extraordinary survivors from a golden, bygone age of whisky production.

"This is what aged sherry-matured whisky is all about - gorgeous colouring, luscious fruity aromas, rich sherry and dark chocolate flavours combining brilliantly to create sweet, gutsy and utterly memorable malts."

GlenDronack is owned by the Benriach Distillery Co, which also owns Glenglassaugh single malt as well as its own eponymous whisky.

Benriach posted record annual pre-tax profits of £11.1 million in 2014, up 24% year on year.

It acquired GlenDronack from Chivas Brothers in 2008.

The UK is Benriach's third biggest market after Taiwan and Germany.

It ships to over 40 countries worldwide and is expanding sales in in Africa and the US, as well as in other key markets such as Hong Kong, Singapore and Korea.

The company has recently expanded its warehousing capacity and is actively buying back casks of its own whiskies that are with previous owners or on the market.
