Chilean brand Viña Montes introduces early 'spring harvest' Sauvignon Blanc

Chilean wine brand Viña Montes has introduced a 'spring harvest' Sauvignon Blanc to its range of wines, which is available at Liberty Wines.

The grapes were grown in the cooler coastal Leyda Valley and hand-picked around 60 days earlier than normal, in February, in order to make a "fresher" spring' wine.

Yields of the grapes were significantly reduced in order to boost their maturation and the leaves were removed in order to expose the grapes to more sun and light. They were also harvested in the morning to keep them cool and the vinification process saw the wine left in the tank with a higher proportion of solids to give it more complexity and a fuller body.

Montes chief winemaker Aurelio Montes said innovation was important to the company. "We are proud to introduce this brand new wine which is designed to celebrate spring, with its fresh and crisp acidity and mix of tropical and citrus fruits," he said.

David Gleave MW of Liberty Wines said it was potentially the only Sauvignon Blanc to be coming out of Chile earlier than the usual harvest and was a good move as it introduced something different into the market.

"Montes is very good at responding to markets and Aurelio had had several requests from both the UK and US to introduce a Sauvignon into the market earlier in the season," he told Harpers.co.uk."He made an assessment that his Sauvignon vineyards in the Leyda Valley would produce grapes which mature early, with ripe fruit and intensity of flavour - this has been borne out with the first vintage of Montes Spring Harvest Sauvignon."
