Broadland releases chocolate-flavoured British red wine

Broadland wineries is releasing a chocolate-flavoured British red wine to be known as Chocolate Drop, which has already secured a Sainsbury's listing.

The wine was developed by Arabella Woodrow MW, and is designed to appeal to UK chocolate lovers with its dark chocolate and black cherry flavour combinations.

UK drinkers already strongly associate chocolate and red wine, and there are other chocolate-inspired wines on the market.

Mark Lansley, chief executive of Broadland Wineries claimed: "Chocolate Drop is another excellent example of Broadland's ability to deliver a product that is better quality and value than other products previously available. This is evidenced by the speed at which our new product is gaining listings and sales, without any advertising."

The firm recommends the wine accompanied by chocolate or a casserole, saying it is "richly sweet" with a "luscious chocolate character" complete with black fruit flavours.  

The firm says the bottle's label draws on inspiration from luxury chocolate packaging.

The wine is on sale at Sainsbury's rrp £6.

Lansley recently told Harpers.co.uk that the Norfolk-based firm has grown sales by 28% in the past year, with profits up 50% before tax.

The company, which acts as an agent, bottler and logistics house, is confident growth will continue in the coming years. Lansley said in June: "We still have capacity. I anticipate sales going up by another 28% this year, that's because we're developing bespoke products for retailers providing own label and own brands."

The firm offers wine bottling of quantities from 2,000 to 24,000 litres. In the past four years the firm has changed its focus away from 95% contract packing to just 5%, with private and own label accounting for 75% and own brands 20%.
