FRENCH WINE EXPORTS FALL

Published:  23 July, 2008

French wine exports are continuing to struggle, with the figures for the first eight months of 2004 down significantly - 5.6% by volume and 9.6% by value. According to the Federation of Wine & Spirits Exporters (FEVS), Bordeaux was the hardest hit, with exports falling 10.4% by volume and 25.4% in value. However, this figure was skewed by the high value of exports last year when the enormously popular 2000 vintage was shipped. Burgundy bucked the national trend, recording an increase of 11.1% in value despite a 3.6% drop in volume. Champagne - which is not included in the overall figures - was the real success story, growing by 10% in value and 7% in volume. The figures are significantly down on 2002, which saw a rise of 2.3% by value on the previous year, with a 2.4% dip in volume.
