Scotland win the World Cup...Harpers Predictions game!

Published:  14 July, 2014

James Macdonald of Burlington Drinks can hold his head up high today as the canniest, wisest football tipster in the UK wine and spirits industry as he came out top in the Harpers World Cup Predictathon.

If Messi, Higuain or Palacios had taken any of those gilt edged chances then it would have been a very different story with a whole stack load of wine trade folk predicting Argentina would be the overall winner.

But in the end those all-important 10 points for predicting the overall winner pipped the scales in Macdonald's favour and wins him a mixed case of Franciacorta premium Italian sparkling wine.

Macdonald stacked up 15 points in all having also predicted three of four semi-finalists, Brazil, Germany and Argentina (three points) and perhaps not surprisingly being of Scottish descent assuming correctly that England would not get through the group (two points) stage.

He said: "Good news! Thanks for this. I watched the game in my local pub whilst enjoying a few Hayman's Old Tom and tonics! It was great to see Germany steam to the win, I have spent a lot of time in Germany and have many friends there! I am Scottish so without a team of my own to cheer for and with England out so early on in the tournament, my allegiances fell to Deutschland!"

He pipped Katie Canfield, and our own Harpers Californian correspondent, who missed out just by one point after also picking Germany to win and naming all four semi-finalists. But predicting England would reach the quarter-finals let her down.

No-one who entered correctly named the overall top goal scorer as being James Rodriguez with the vast majority going for Thomas Muller, who only missed out by one goal.

Equally no-one got near the final number of red cards (10) which was not surprising considering it was one of the lowest ever recorded in the World Cup.

Thanks to everyone who entered and shared not only their World Cup predictions with us, but also their World Cup Memories over the last couple of weeks.

Super Mario Goetze has added a whole new World Cup memory of his own.
