Scotch whisky giant The Macallan has announced the most significant' launch in its history with the release of new packaging and three new additions to its range. Unlike traditional Macallans, The Macallan Fine Oak is aged in a mixture of European Sherry casks and American bourbon casks, and will be available as a 10, a 15 and a 21 Year Old. The original Macallan range is aged in Sherry casks, and the company says the bourbon casks add smoothness and lightness. After tasting the three new additions, whisky expert Jim Murray dubbed them as weapons of mass distinction'. Matthew Turner, The Macallan's global brands controller, said: The launch of The Macallan Fine Oak is the most important in the long and proud history of The Macallan. We are delighted with the positive response from renowned whisky experts. We now look forward to a successful global launch and bringing the discerning and sophisticated whisky drinker the opportunity to enjoy this sublime, delicate and light single malt from The Macallan, the world's most precious whisky.' The new packaging, according to the company, reflects the luxurious nature of the brand', and features a contemporary' new bottle, as well as finely crafted' outer-packaging and different-coloured boxes to identify the various ages. Both the Fine Oak range and the new packaging will be available from August. A kit designed to test the authenticity of Scotch whisky has won a major award. The spectroscopic portable testing kit - known as the authenticator' - was designed by Diageo Scotland and won the BOC-sponsored Technological Development of the Year Award at Food Processing magazine's awards evening. The kit uses UV technology and apparently cuts the screening process from up to two weeks to barely one minute.
