Mangrove adds Old Forester Bourbon to its range

Published:  23 January, 2014

UK distributor Mangrove will now offer Old Forester Bourbon whiskey as part of its portfolio of specialist spirits and liqueurs.

Nick Gillet, managing director of Mangrove, said: "I am delighted to represent such an iconic brand, it is an honour to represent the Brown family and the product on which the Brown-Forman company was founded."

Old Forester Bourbon was founded in 1870 by George Garvin Brown, founder of today's Brown-Forman company, in Louisville Kentucky. It is still owned by a descendant of the founder today and is the oldest Bourbon brand in continuous production operating for over 140 years. Old Forester was still made during Prohibition, as it was sold on prescription for medicinal purposes.

Old Forester was also the first bottled whiskey to be sold in glass bottles. At the time, whiskey was sold to bars in barrels and the bar then decided on the dilution of whisky and water it wanted to sell. George Garvin Brown wanted to ensure the quality of his whiskey and so he began to bottle and seal his whiskey and then hand signed the bottle to assure the buyer of its authenticity.

Old Forester Classic has a 43% abv and still uses the original recipe of 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley.

Mangrove distributes to a network of on-trade, independent and multiple off-trade retailers as well as to the duty free sector.

Mangrove is part of the Coe Group of companies, which also owns Coe Vintners and Barwell & Jones.
