Countdown to SITT Spring 2014

Published:  14 January, 2014

Independents looking to seek out the latest wine gems are gearing up for the spring Specialist Importers Trade Tastings, which get underway on February 24 in Manchester and February 26 in London.

February's handpicked selection of specialist agents, importers and producers aims to deliver a selection of wines like no other for the independent sector.

Department 33, which focuses on French and European wines, predicted that its St Emilion Grand Cru tiny garagiste producer Château La Rose Monturon Amalgame, was likely to "excite palates" and get people talking.

Lance Piggott of organic and biodynamic specialist Vintage Roots is looking forward to "banishing any myths one might have about organic and biodynamic wines being not very good or too expensive". Vintage Roots is offering discounts to new clients.

Laurie Webster, managing director of Argentinian specialist Las Bodegas, who describes SITT as the "best tasting event in the calendar" is looking forward to showing new wines from Matias Michelini, who he describes as a "legend in the making, a genuine maverick".

Buyers will also have the chance to taste a host of hard-to-find wines under one roof. Jo Locke MW, buyer for the Wine Society, said:  "I'm looking for niche and different wines that I might not find elsewhere and this is a tasting with plenty of interest if you want to see wines and suppliers offering something beyond the run-off-the-mill."

Emily Harman, sommelier at the Zetter Group, adds: "This is a great tasting where suppliers show unique wines - wines with personality, from smaller wineries - and that is exactly what I'm looking for: wines that are dynamic and different."

Where and when

The Manchester tasting runs from 10.30am until 5pm at The Point, Lancashire County Cricket Club, Manchester; while the London event takes place at Lindley Hall in the Royal Horticultural Halls from 10.30am until 6pm.

Wake up to Brazilian wines

At the same time as discovering more about wines from this up-and-coming region, you can learn how Wines from Brazil will support your business during 2014, a year when the World Cup comes to Brazil. Both retailers and consumers will have the opportunity to win trips to Brazil, details of which will be revealed at the SITT masterclass.
