JUPE DUPES AND GETS FIVE YEARS

Convicted fraudster Stephen Jupe was sentenced to five years in prison at Southwark Crown Court on Friday for his role in the Marshall Wineries' drinks investment fraud that grossed around 4 million (see Stephen Jupe found guilty of fraud', Harpers 30 April). Sentencing Jupe, 50, on three counts of fraudulent trading and one count of using a prohibited name, His Honour Judge Stewart said that this was a dishonest scheme from the outset'. Many of the investors were retired people who lost a lot of their savings. Alka Ladva of the Serious Fraud Office commented: This sends out the signal that the sentence fits a cynical and calculated fraud. Jupe more or less doubled the cost price. Investors will never be able to get that back. Many bought single barrels and the blending market does not deal in such trivial quantities. They are therefore unsellable.'
