VALENCAY PROMOTED TO FULL AOC

Published:  23 July, 2008

By Jim Budd

The small Loire appellation of Valenay was promoted from VDQS to full AC status by the INAO, at a meeting on the 6 and 7 November. One hundred and thirty-three hectares were declared as Valenay in 2001, and the average production is 8,000hl - 80% red and ros using the same grape varieties as Eastern Touraine. The decision must now be ratified by the minister of agriculture. Valenay's promotion leaves 19 VDQSs remaining, eight of them in the Loire.
