UNWINS NEW BUYERS

Published:  23 July, 2008

The family-owned Unwins off-licence chain has unveiled a number of top-level appointments, as it attempts to shake off its troubled reputation. Family member Philip Wetz recenty became trade relations director, meaning that John Callaghan now moves to become retail operations director. David Armstrong, formerly trading director with the Thresher Group, becomes purchasing director. Working under Armstrong are wine sourcer John Hart and three new retail buyers: Rob Hart (ex-Balfour); Adrian Talboys (ex-Europa Foods); and Richard Pitcher (ex-Sainsbury's). Philip Wetz commented: We are very optimistic. People forget that we have some great sites, more than Thresher in the southeast. Along with hiring new staff we are now investing in updating our shops and sytems.' The company is also preparing to open its biggest-ever store, a 2,100sq ft site located in Tonbridge, Kent.
