Piggy Bank, a pioneering charity initiative from Guy Anderson Wines that engages wine drinkers through Facebook and other social media, has made its first donation to good causes.

For every bottle sold, GAW donates 50p to charity and when the Piggy Bank is full (it holds £10,000) funds are distributed proportionally between charities according to the votes of consumers.

The 20,000-plus votes cast have seen £5,076 awarded to diabetes charity JDRF (jdrf.org.uk), £4,490 to spinal injury charity Back Up (backuptrust.org.uk) and £434 to African wildlife protection fund Tusk (tusk.org).

The wines are bottled in simple, no-frills packaging so everything is invested in the contents and the range comprises: Giorgio Flessati Sauvignon Blanc, Elqui Valley, Chile 2011; Giorgio Flessati Syrah, Elqui Valley, Chile 2010;  Norrel Robertson Tempranillo, Extremadura, Spain 2011; Norrel Robertson Verdejo, Castilla y León, Spain 2011; Thierry Boudinaud Grenache Syrah Rosé, Pays d'Oc, France 2011; and Thierry Boudinaud Grenache, Pays d'Oc, France 2011 (rrp £7.99).

Owner Guy Anderson said: "It is wonderful to have raised £10,000 for good causes so soon. We're learning as we go along how social media can help a smaller company like GAW reach a wide audience to build a wine brand without totally relying on promotions. Waitrose is doing a fantastic job and it is exciting to see how motivated the people in stores are already."

Stockists include Waitrose (online and selected stores), Tesco.com (Tempranillo only from September) and the wines are also available in the US. See piggybankwine.com for more information.
