Southern French co-operative Les Vignobles Foncalieu has launched Grand Vins - a collection of prestige wines that celebrate the "excellent" 2009 vintage.

The move comes on the back of a strong investment into a dedicated wing of the winery which has allowed it to develop the range and, alongside the "excellent" 2009 vintage, has seen a step up in quality for all four wines.

The Grands Vins wines are: Le Lien from AOC Minervois, L'Apogée from AOC Saint-Chinian,  Les Illustres from VDP Coteaux d'Ensérune and La Lumière from AOC Corbières.

The wines have an rrp of £20 per bottle and an as-yet-unnamed AOC Côtes du Rhône Villages St Gervais will be added to the range in 2013.

Gabriel Ruetsch, chief agronomist, said: "With optimum care in the vineyard and state-of-the-art technology in the winery, there is no reason why the wines of the Languedoc can't compete with the best of the world."

The wines are inspired by Les Vignobles Foncalieu president Michel Bataille and his selected team of 15 winegrowers who signed up to a rigorous quality programme.

Visit Les Vignobles Foncalieu at the LIWF next week at stand F30/2G.
