REPRIEVE FOR FRONTON

The Ctes du Frontonnais appellation in southwest France has been saved from the bulldozers. The vineyards had been threatened by plans for a second airport at Toulouse that would have covered much of the 2,400ha of the appellation. On Thursday of last week (15 May) Hubert Fournier, prfet of the region, said that Fronton and Vacquiers, two of the proposed sites - both of which would have affected the Frontonnais vineyards - had been ruled out, leaving another six sites in other areas under consideration. Fournier admitted that it was not desirable to build an airport in a vineyard' and, while adding that no firm decision had been made as to the eventual site of the second airport, he confirmed that it would not be in the Frontonnais.
