Spar launches instore responsible drinking radio ad

Published:  24 January, 2012

Spar UK is urging its retailers to show their commitment to responsible alcohol sales, by promoting government initiatives with an instore radio advert.

An awareness campaign aiming to educate consumers on the average alcohol content of a bottle or can of beer, glass of wine and measure of spirits will be launched in Spar stores at the end of January.

In a move that marks a first for the convenience sector, an advert will be played on its instore radio station Spar Live to promote the 'do you know how many units are in your drink?' message.

Spar retailers will also be expected to prohibit cross merchandising or linked display of alcohol with products that appeal to children, and also the cross promotion of alcohol with pharmaceutical products or branded 'hangover' remedies, as laid out in new initiatives suggested as part of the government's Responsibility Deal.

Barry Wallis, Spar UK retail development controller, said: "The government advises that people should not regularly drink more than the daily unit guidelines of three to four units of alcohol for men and two to three units of alcohol for women.

"Therefore through the medium of our instore radio and POS programme, we are urging our members to demonstrate that they are responsible Spar retailers by supporting these initiatives to promote responsible drinking amongst their consumers."

The instore radio advert will go live on the airwaves from 30 January.
