Drinks companies back Fairtrade in 2008

Published:  23 July, 2008

Leading retailers and drinks companies will take part in Fairtrade fortnight in February 2008, which will be entitled Change Today. Choose Fairtrade.

More than 120 representatives from companies including the Co-op, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury's, Ehrmanns and Bottle Green attended the Fairtrade foundation's annual conference which marked the start of the build-up to next year's Fairtrade fortnight.

This year's fortnight saw retail sales double over the two-week period (AC Nielsen) and in 2006 UK Fairtrade sales reached topped 290 million.

Mark Varney, Fairtrade foundation business development manager, said: "With the heightened awareness and uplift in sales around Fairtrade Fortnight, it's the perfect time for companies to improve visibility and implement point-of-sale around Fairtrade, or consider extending their range of Fairtrade certified products".
