Portman celebrates high compliance on 25th anniversary

Published:  26 January, 2021

A new report out today from The Portman Group reveals an all time high in compliance with its Code of Practice for the UK drinks industry.

The report, which looks at the period 2018 to 2020, reveals a 95% compliance to the Code of Practice on the naming, packaging and promotion of alcoholic drinks, against 92% in 2012.

As the social responsibility and regulatory body for alcohol in the UK, The Portman Group’s report details the organisations activities over the past three years, including the development of the sixth edition of the Code, with new and updated guidance and rules to ensure best practice.

“This shows a strong record of effective regulatory performance over the past three years. The industry’s high level of compliance with our ever-evolving code enables us to fly the flag for a responsible alcohol industry with the public and the Government,” said Portman Group CEO Matt Lambert.

“At a time when politicians in neighbouring nations are increasingly turning their attention to introducing statutory restrictions on alcohol marketing, the sector’s support and adherence to the Code helps us safe-guard effective and appropriate self-regulation for the sector.”

During the three years covered by the report, the Complaints Panel reviewed 43 complaints against alcoholic drinks companies, with 25 upheld.

A majority (eight) of those complaints upheld related to alcoholic beverages ‘particular appeal to under-18s’, with 11 complaints concerning ‘association bravado, or with violent, aggressive, dangerous, anti-social or illegal behaviour’ collectively accounted for the second highest number of complaints at 11 in total, followed by encouragement of ‘illegal, irresponsible or immoderate consumption’ which garnered a further eight complaints.

The body’s most serious sanction, its Retailer Alert Bulletin, was implemented four times against retailers for products that had breached the Code, requesting that the retailer cease stocking the product.

The Portman Group is the alcohol industry regulator and social responsibility body. It has over 130 Code signatories from producers, retailers and membership bodies.
