The latest Sicilian vintage will be notable for its “balance in all respects, weather and climate, production and quality” said Uva Sapiens founder and consultant Mattia Filippi at the 16th edition of Sicilia en Primeur.
In terms of weather and climate, 2018 had the highest ever-registered temperature in over a century, but Sicily registered no thermic excesses and was not afflicted by the strong weather anomalies involving other European regions.
Sicily, together with Piedmont and Tuscany, remains one of the most balanced Italian regions, which results in a limited production per hectare that ensures quality. Grapes benefited from summer rain while harvest times were prolonged, meaning slower maturation and a more limited sugar accumulation. Cool temperatures during the harvest also helped preserve aromas and acidity in white grape varieties.
Analysis of data compiled by UniCredit said the Sicilian wine industry is worth 550 million and growing. In 2018 sales were up 6% and are predicted to exceed 100 million bottles in 2019.
