The week that was

Published:  10 May, 2019

In case you missed some of the headlines this week on harpers.co.uk, here’s a review of the top online news, analysis, opinion and features.

Top news stories: Sustainability, alternative formats – and inevitably, pink – are the talk of the town at the moment, and this week didn’t disappoint when it comes to trends leading innovation in BWS.

Concha y Toro’s foray into wine in can is a major endorsement of this smaller and more accessible serving size, which has already won over consumers in the US.

Dubbed Ojos, CyT’s new Chilean wine-based spritzer isn’t the only of its type to hit the market.

All Bar One is also heading down canned route with Mirabeau Prêt-à-Porter wine in a 250ml can from Provence.

And columnist Tim Atkin MW continues to drum up debate with his take on the relevance of today’s wine writers.

Staring down the barrel, Atkin takes aim at the editorial profession, while ‘karaoke journalism’ comes under fire for undermining expertise.

Analysis and Insights: Wildly varying yields among the leading châteaux makes the 2018 Bordeaux vintage one of the most memorable in living memory, found Gavin Quinney in his annual en primeur and vintage report for Harpers.

We also looked at the rise and rise of English and Welsh wines at home and abroad, with exports expected to rise significantly over the next few years.

Last but not least, we got revved up and prepped for one of the biggest dates in the trade calendar, London Wine Fair, which lands at the Olympia in two weeks’ time.

People and Opinion: Harpers editor Andrew Catchpole caught up with Sara Rossi whose stellar career so far spans Fera at Claridges, Gordon Ramsay’s Royal Hospital Road and the Dorchester Collection, where she was mentored by Vanessa Cinti.

And Guy Woodward took lessons from two of Kentucky’s biggest exports, horses and bourbon, and pondered what makes good breeding when it comes to wine.
