Liberty Wines has added Chinese winery Kanaan to its portfolio.
From this week, Liberty will be stocking two wines from the Ningxia based winery - Ningxia Riesling 2017 (rrp: £25.99) and Pretty Pony Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2013 (rrp: £42.99).
Nestled at the foot of the Helan Mountains in Ningxia, the 16.8 hectares Kanaan estate enjoys a dry, sunny climate with moderate temperatures during the growing season, a shield from cold northerly winds, alluvial soils and vineyard sites with ideal aspects in the foothills. To ensure these natural attributes are captured in the wines, Ningxia has stringent rules to ensure producers remain focused on quality.
Kaanan had impressed Liberty with the “pristine, fruit forward, rounded character of their wines”, said managing director David Gleave.
“They are not only very well-made but are highly drinkable and are a perfect fit for our portfolio.”
Considered one of the country’s top wineries, Kanaan is paving the way for Ningxia to be one of China’s leading regions for fine wine production, he added.
“Grapes have been cultivated in China for centuries on the indigenous Vitis amurensis vines, as well as the Vitis vinifera vines that arrived in the country via the ancient Silk Road, but it is only in the past 10 years that China’s fine wine scene is making a name for itself.”
Established in 2011, Kanaan Winery is owner by Wang Fang, daughter of Wang Feng Yu, a pioneer of viticulture in Ningxia, who is known for embarking on the near-impossible mission of growing Riesling, her favourite variety, in Ningxia.
