The Champagne Academy has appointed Alice Archer as its new chair for 2019 taking over from Marcus Little.
Taking on her new role with immediate effect, Archer has always had a keen interest in Champagne and studied The Champagne Academy course in 2015. She is currently a student on the MW Programme and works for Cambridge Wine Merchants.
As the first female chair in eight years, Archer said she had “exciting plans” for her year at the helm.
“As our member houses will doubtless attest, there should be no rush to mess with a winning assemblage, and as such I shall not be looking to introduce any revolutionary plans over the next year. Rather I hope to build on the successes of recent vintages with a particular focus on education, following on from the two sell-out Alternative Cuvée tastings,” she said, adding she planned to continue the extensive work of past chairs and presidential houses in promoting the Academy’s renown within the UK wine trade.
The appointment of Archer was announced at The Champagne Academy’s AGM this week, where a cheque for £5,385 was presented to the Academy’s 2018 charity, The Royal Association for Deaf People. This year’s chosen charity is Diabetes UK.
The Champagne Academy also revealed new Presidential House, Maison Ruinart, at the AGM.
Founded in 1956 to enhance the knowledge about Champagne in the UK drinks industry, The Champagne Academy now counts more than 600 Academicians and has a schedule of events and tastings throughout the year.
