Amathus Drinks has signed a deal as the UK distributor of organically certified South African wine producer Org de Rac.
The initial wines to be stocked by Amathus from the producer include a fresh, citrus and herb-driven Sauvignon Blanc, a Merlot of “incredible complexity for the price”, a rich, textured Chardonnay and a Rhône-style Syrah.
In addition, a pair of red and white blends from Org de Rac’s Die Waghuis label have been imported.
Amathus had been “bowled over” by the quality versus value ratio of the wines, said head of wine Jeremy Lithgow MW.
“We’re really pleased to be representing Org de Rac in the UK and it’s particularly important to us that it is a producer at the forefront of the South African organic movement, as this is a direction in which we are increasingly heading as a business,” he said.
Established in 2001, Org de Rac was one of the first fully organic producers of South Africa and in 2005, the first wines were produced from low-yielding vineyards on well-drained south facing slopes.
The wines are crafted by veteran winemaker Frank Meaker who has also overseen the shift towards completely vegan production methods.
The latest addition to Amathus wine division portfolio follows a dozen new producers added in the past year alone, with further new listings from Spain, Greece, France and Japan amongst others to be confirmed soon.
