Simpsons releases its first sparkler

Published:  13 November, 2018

Kent estate Simpsons has released its first sparkling wine, six years after its founders branched out from the Languedoc in France to launch their first UK venture.

The Canterbury Rose 2016 is made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, all grown on the estate owned by Ruth and Charles Simpson.

It is the first English sparkling wine for the couple, who have also been making wine at Domaine Sainte Rose in the Languedoc since 2002.

In 2012, the pair invested in 90 acres of land in Barham, Kent, and went on to release their first wine, a still Chardonnay, last year.

A tie up with Naked Wines is also now available.

The collaboration, which was given the name Beora by crowdfunders last year, is an English fizz.

The Canterbury Rose however will be the first sparkler under the Simpsons name, with fifteen months on the lees and six months aging in bottle.

Co-founder Ruth Simpson said they had chosen “the finest parcels”, made in their “state-of-the-art winery” which opened in 2016.

That same year, they launched their "inaugural vintage. Now the time has arrived to unveil our fresh approach to winemaking with the exciting release of our first English sparkling wine”, she said.

Canterbury Rose 2016 carries an RRP of £210 for a case of six.
