British Columbia’s Okanagan Crush Pad (OCP) has acquired the Secrest Mountain Vineyard for an undisclosed sum.
The acquisition of the Secrest Mountain vineyard, under lease to OCP since 2010, would provide the producer with 80 acres of grapes between its Switchback and Garnet Valley Ranch vineyards, both in Summerland, and the Oliver located Secrest Mountain.
Plans were also underway to plant existing sites with an additional 55 acres to bring the total acreage under vine to 135, said OCP, adding Secrest Mountain was on the cusp of receiving organic certification.
“Owning and controlling our grape supply is critical to our future, and we’ve been very fortunate that the previous owners of Secrest Mountain, the Wise family, shared our vision and put in three years of hard work to convert the farm to organic practices - the more work done in the vineyard, the less required in the cellar which fits fully with our winemaking ethos,” said co-owner Christine Coletta.
The cool, high altitude location of Secrest Mountain gave exceptional grapes that could be harvested at “full physiological ripeness” with lower sugar levels and subsequently create delicate, lower alcohol wines, said OCP’s chief winemaker Matt Dumayne.
“We are able to produce some of the best sparkling, Pinot and Gamay that I have made over the course of my career from this vineyard.”
Claimed to b Canada’s first purpose-built custom crush winery facility, OCP is focused on making wines that “celebrate purity and simplicity”.
In the UK, the wines are available to the on and off-trade via Red Squirrel Wines.
