Bloom & Wild begins posting ‘letterbox wine’

The company behind a plastic letterbox wine bottle that allows wine to be posted through drinkers’ doors has launched a partnership with a leading online florist.

Garçon Wine’s Chilean Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc will be available in the company’s trademark 750ml PET flattened wine bottles through Bloom & Wild from tomorrow (Friday 27th April).

The deal will help Garçon cater for the ‘Amazon generation’ and has the potential to reduce the wine trade’s environmental impact, said Garçon CEO and co-founder Santiago Navarro.

“As a responsible company our aim has been to create the most environmentally friendly wine bottles that would revolutionise the way consumers receive and businesses supply wine,” he said.

“Offering one of the first bottles to be made from 100% recycled PET has enabled us to create the greenest wine bottles available. They are 87% lighter and 40% smaller than traditional wine bottles, hugely reducing carbon emissions in the wine supply chain.”

Garçon launched the letterbox bottle after bagging a £20k prize on CNBC’s Pop Up Start Up, a TV show in which entrepreneurs are given guidance from some of Britain’s brightest business brains. The business also won the gong for Best New Beverage Concept at 2017’s World Beverage Innovation Awards.

Last May, the business was granted intellectual property protection in 35 countries for the bottle after winning UK protection in November 2016. The bottles are made from a tough, glass-like plastic and are slightly taller than standard bottles but around half as thick. They are packaged in cardboard to protect them in transit.

Garçon is now working with a number of players including winemaker and bulk wine expert Barry Dick MW and packaging and plastics specialist Sarah Greenwood with a view to rolling the format out further. Last year, co-founder Joe Revell told Harpers that the concept was garnering interest from “some of the world’s largest wine brands”.
