ABS expands Italian portfolio with first Maremma wines

Published:  14 March, 2018

Awin Barratt Siegel (ABS) has signed a deal as the new UK distributor for Tuscan winery Nittardi, taking over from OW Loeb.

The deal, which takes place with immediate effect, includes ABS listing four of the family-owned winery’s key wines – BEN, IGT Toscana - a 100% Vermentino grown in Maremma; AD Astra, DOC Maremma - a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc plus 5% of ‘secret grape varieties’ and Belcanto, Chianti Classico DOCG -a 90% Sangiovese.

The quarter is completed by Casanuova di Nittardi Vigna Doghessa Chianti Classico DOCG – a 100% Sangiovese from the single vineyard “Vigna Doghessa”.

The addition of the Maremma wines marked the first time the region had appeared on ABS’ lists, said managing partner, Michael Awin.

“We are delighted to welcome Nittardi into the Portfolio - the wines are tremendous and I’m looking forward to a long and successful partnership,” he said.

Léon Femfert, managing director at Nittardi, said: “We are sure that with the knowledge and experience of ABS our wines from Chianti Classico and Maremma will find a wider audience in the UK.”

Nittardi has a fascinating history, it was owned by the Renaissance artist Michelangelo, who sent Nittardi wine to Rome as a gift to the Pope Julius II.

Today, in honour of that tradition, each year the first bottles of the wine from the Maremma vineyards are presented to the Pope.
