Newcomer Wines launches Central European wine fair

The New Old World event, which will take place 5th March in London, will see 35 organic and biodynamic growers from Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Switzerland gather to showcase their portfolios.

The fair had been designed to showcase areas “often overlooked”, but which had been rediscovered and revived by winemakers committed to local traditions and sustainable winemaking practices, said Newcomer Wines.

“Our portfolio focuses on regions that are still emerging and indeed discovering their own identities, hence the reference to New. However, Central Europe equally has a long and impressive history of vine growing and winemaking, with qualities that are often deemed ‘Old World’, with focus on terroir, local grape varieties and local small scale winemaking,” said co-founder, Peter Honegger.

Winemakers who had “paved the way” for a movement of terroir focussed producers to emerge, such as Austria’s Christian Tschida, Ewald Tscheppe of Werlitsch, Alwin Jurtschitsch and Claus Preisinger, would be present at the fair, he added, alongside relative newcomers such as Markus Ruch of Switzerland, and Austria’s Stefanie and Susanne Renner of Burgenland’s Rennersistas and Kremstal’s Christoph Hoch.

The latter recently developed his own method for creating secondary fermentation for sparkling wine with indigenous yeast, which will be shown in his brut nature cuvée, Kalkreich.

Indigenous grapes and wine styles portrayed on the day will include Grüner Veltliner, Vernatsch, Furmint, Müller Thurgau, Blaufränkisch, Kekfrankos, Fendant, Reze.

Newcomer Wines has, since it was founded in 2014, grown from a student start-up shop to an agent and distributor for wineries in Central Europe.

It supplies wine to the on-trade and independent merchants, including Sager + Wilde, Fera at Claridge’s, Le Manoir Aux Quat’ Saisons and Vagabond Wines.
