Amazon pulls online wine arm

Published:  24 October, 2017

Amazon has confirmed it is closing down its dedicated online wine arm - Amazon Wine, after just five years.

The site, which allowed third-party wine makers and sellers to sell their products online through Amazon, would seize to operate from 31 December this year, said the online retailer.

It is thought that Amazon was forced to kill Amazon Wine after its recent acquisition of Whole Foods Market, including Whole Foods’ wine business.

Wine would continue to be offered through Amazon Fresh, Prime Now and Whole Foods Market, Amazon stated in a note to wine sellers sent out this week, with customers unable to place orders for wine after 31 December, and sellers prevented from adding more products by January 2018.

Amazon first set out to crack online wine with the launch of Wineshopper.com in 2000, which it relaunched in 2009 before replacing it with Amazon Wine in 2012.
