Start-up Aotearoa New Zealand Fine Wine Estates acquires first vineyards

Published:  16 August, 2017

Aotearoa New Zealand Fine Wine Estates Limited Partnership (ANZFWE) has acquired two vineyards, and part in a third – the company’s first purchases since it was set up at the beginning of this year.

The limited partnership, a venture between US based Sangreal Wines and LandbaseWineNZ, this morning announced it has bought Pyramid Valley Vineyards in Waikari, North Canterbury, and Lowburn Ferry Wines, Central Otago, for an undisclosed sum.

In addition, it has acquired a small piece of land in the Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District in Hawke's Bay.

Describing Pyramid Valley and Lowburn Ferry as “two of the greatest” Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards in the world, company co-founder and sole director of LandbaseWineNZ, Steve Smith MW, said:

“For me it's the ultimate wine project: highly crafted close relationships with the land, wines and our people and some discerning investment in what will make these properties amongst the wine world's most revered and successful long term estates.”

The two properties are subject to the New Zealand Governments Overseas Investment Office approval, with each business will continuing to operate under the direction of their existing owners while this process is completed.

ANZFWE also announce the appointment of Michael Henley as chief executive. He joins the company following five years as chief executive officer of Trinity Hill Winery.
