The Midcounties Co-operative ramps up focus on regional wine

Published:  18 July, 2017

A trio of English wine producers has secured listings with The Midcounties Co-operative Food as the retailer ramps up its regional products and staff training.

The wines, a nine-strong collection featuring red, white, rosé and sparkling, is produced by three regional vineyards - Brightwell in Oxfordshire, Sixteen Ridges in Worcestershire and Herefordshire and Compton Green in Gloucestershire.

Rolling out into all of the retailer’s Chipping Norton, Newent, Stourport and Woodstock stores from the end of this month, the wines will form part of the retailer’s Best of Our Counties range, which is made up of food and drink sourced from the county or neighbouring county of each store.

In addition to its regional wine focus, The Midcounties Co-operative said it was investing in WSET training for all its store managers to enable them to "talk about them" with customers.

“The training has been a great conversational tool, which will help our store managers speak confidently about what affects a wine’s flavour – like the grapes, the land, the climate, and the production process – so they can help customers choose which wines will taste better with the food they’re buying,” said Matt Fletcher, direct sourcing manager at The Midcounties Co-operative Food.

The new English wine collection comprises Crispin white, Oxford Rose rosé, and Oxford Regatta red from Brightwell; Estate Special Reserve white and Wild Rose rosé from Compton Green and Pinot Noir Rosé, Pinot Noir Rosé sparkling, Signature Cuveé sparkling white, and White Pinot Noir from Sixteen Ridges.
