Jascots Wine Merchants has reported a 171% volume hike in its English wine sales.
The London-based on-trade specialist said it had sold in excess of 8,000 bottles in the six month to 30 June, 2017 – a 171% jump compared to the same period the previous year (internal accounts).
Sales had been boosted by a “substantial” expansion of its English portfolio in 2016, including ranges from Harrow & Hope, Sixteen Ridges and Lyme Bay, it said.
Having moved on form being a “novelty”, English wine had taken on a premium spot on many top restaurant wine lists, said managing partner, Miles MacInnes, adding the wider movement towards supporting local growers and industries only bolstered this trend.
“The quality and diversity of English wine has been widely recognised by critics and in the last year especially and we’ve seen consumers really embrace the category.”
The strong performance follows a record-breaking year of sales for English wines, which reached £132 million turnover in 2016.
In a bid to keep the momentum going, the English Wine Producers earlier this year announced an additional one million vines were due to be planted in the UK this year, making the wine industry one of the fastest growing agricultural sectors in the country.
